School Lunches

We believe that healthy, nutritious meals are an important part of the school day. This page provides information about our school lunch options, including the menu and details about dietary requirements or allergies. We are committed to offering balanced meals that support students' health and well-being, with a variety of choices to cater to different tastes and preferences.

The dining hall uses biometrics, so you can add money onto your child's account which is stored against their fingerprint data.

Students simply choose their food and scan their finger to pay so they never have to worry about forgetting their dinner money again.

OCS is the company chosen by your school to provide the meal service. They specialise in providing catering to schools and colleges across the country.

The food children eat at school plays an important role in their wellbeing, and eating a well balanced diet will not only maintain and improve their health, but will also set them on the right track for later life. We understand this and that’s why we are passionate about serving fresh, high quality and locally sourced food that is cooked in our kitchen.

Get in touch

OCS are experts in school catering and have years of experience when it comes to school food.

If you have any questions about our service or any special dietary requirements, please get in touch.

The system we use incorporates the latest technology and eliminates the need for money to be sent in with students and allows top-up payments to be made directly utilising the school’s current internet payment system. Parents will also be able to see what has been purchased via the online payment system, linked to a biometric system which recognises the thumb/finger of the student at the revaluation pay points and at the tills. There will be a daily ‘spend limit’ programmed into the system of £4.00, though this can be increased or decreased to a value set by parents/carers for their child.

Free School Meals

There are 3 ways your child can get free school meals:

1. Targeted Free School Meals

Who gets it?
Children whose families receive Universal Credit with annual household earnings of £7,400 or less and certain benefits. If eligible, your child will receive free school meals throughout their school and further education up to age 19, extra school funding and access to the Holiday Activities and Food programme. You need to apply and eligibility will be checked regularly.

2. Expanded Free School Meals (NEW from September 2026)

Who gets it?
From September 2026, children in households receiving Universal Credit, with annual household earnings exceeding £7,400 and some other qualifying benefits will be entitled to free school meals throughout their school and further education up to age 19. You need to apply, and annual eligibility checks will be made.

3. Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM)

Who gets it?
All children in Reception, Year 1 and 2. Every child gets a free meal automatically. Families receiving Universal Credit with children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 should still apply for benefits-based free school meals because, if eligible, you could qualify for extra funding to support your child’s education (Pupil Premium) and funded places on the Holiday Activities and Food programme.

Applying for free school meals

If you are eligible for free school meals you need to apply for each child when they start school.

If your child is starting school then please submit your application in August, the month before your child is due to start.

All eligible free school meal claims will be rechecked annually before the start of each academic year to ensure they still qualify.

If you have moved to the area and were receiving free school meals, then you need to either reapply using the online form or provide evidence of the award letter or email you received from the previous authority.

You can check if you are eligible for free school meals by using the online application form (linked above), or by talking to Winterbourne Academy's Finance team (finance@winterbourneacademy.org.uk).

The South Glos Contact Centre is also there to help those who are unable to access the online application or require additional help. Contact 01454 868008 for more information.
