HPV Immunisation Programme

Since September 2008 there has been a National Immunisation Programme to vaccinate girls (and more recently boys) aged 12-13 against Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The HPV Gardasil vaccine protects against diseases caused by HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18:

  • HPV types 16 and 18 are responsible for approximately 70% of cervical cancer cases, 75-80% of anal cancer cases, 70% of HPV-related pre-cancerous lesions of the vulva and vagina, and 75% of HPV related pre-cancerous lesions of the anus
  • HPV types 6 and 11 are responsible for approximately 90% of genital wart cases, the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK.

The HPV vaccination is available for girls and boys at Winterbourne Academy.

  • Girls and boys receive one dose during Year 8.
