Food Banks

With the cost-of-living crisis, food banks are becoming increasingly important, with national figures reporting that 1 in 7 people in the UK face hunger because they don’t have enough money.

Food banks serve as a crucial support system for millions across the UK, offering emergency food supplies to individuals and families facing food insecurity. Their growing importance highlights deeper social and economic issues that make it difficult for many to meet everyday needs. With rising living expenses and shortcomings in the welfare system, food banks provide essential aid to those in urgent need. There are 2,000 food banks in the UK providing food to families who need it.

Accessing food banks can vary depending on the branch or whether it is independent; most food banks are in the Trussell Trust.

For the Trussell Trust:

  • You will need a Foodbank voucher (this can be obtained from referral agencies such as Citizens Advice, children’s centres and health visitors).
  • Once issued with a voucher, you can exchange this for a minimum of three days of emergency food.

Independent food banks can vary with regards to accessing arrangements and referrals - you can always check their website for further details. For example, for Ignite Life (a local independent food bank) no referral is needed; anyone who is in need of help will be accepted.
