Winterbourne Academy

GCSE Results Press Release - 20th August 2020

This year’s GCSE results show that hard work and resilience in this unique and unpredictable year have won the day for Winterbourne Academy students

We are thrilled to announce that in 2020 Winterbourne results have continued to rise steadily, and that this year 77% of Winterbourne students achieved 4 and above in English and maths with 60% at grade 5 and above in both.

With everything that has happened we are very proud not only that our attainment remains high but also that our steady but sure improvements in results overall are being sustained over time.

Although we are of course really pleased as a school to see our grades coming in high once more across a wide range of national measures, it is the achievement of the individual students that really matters.

2020 has seen some truly remarkable individual performances from students. We would like to recognise the achievements of the following students who came in with 9 or 10 results all at grade 8 or higher:

  • James Bennion
  • Owen Cotgias
  • Kian Goodwin
  • Olivia Hussey
  • Sonny Reynolds
  • Emily Rosenberg
  • Eloise Salt
  • Hannah Sharp
  • Ben Simister

Emily Rosenberg deserves a really special mention for the astonishing and very well-deserved achievement of 10 GCSEs all at grade 9!

Headteacher Mr Beardmore said:

“These are amazing performances from high-achieving students who have worked consistently hard. We all know that achievement can mean many things. It can be about starting points, the specific challenges we face and/ or the determination we show to improve. Along with those already mentioned I would like to praise the following students for their grit, character and resilience which has resulted in great progress academically but also in terms of personal development:

  • Michael Heavens
  • Chloe Olds
  • Fliss Ounsworth
  • Chloe Dean
  • Amy Hewitt
  • Sam Pulsford
  • Mia Smith
  • Tom Hemsley
  • Josie Everett
  • Jamie Fricker

Mr Beardmore added:

“When I look at the results across the board I am struck not only by the number of excellent individual performances but also by the sheer breadth of achievement across the Arts, practical, vocational and DT subjects, Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Maths, English and the wide range of other courses we offer.

I believe this re-confirms and validates our determination at Winterbourne to continue offering a broad and enriching curriculum where students can pursue interests and abilities and achieve excellence, but also develop a truly broad, diverse and relevant education. It also shows that we are committed to helping all students achieve their best irrespective of their prior ability or starting points.

I want to pay tribute to the class of 2020 who worked so hard and consistently throughout what was an incredibly challenging year. I also want to thank on their behalf the teachers, support staff and of course the parents who supported them and pushed them on to give of their best”
