Fantastic STEM opportunity for Year 8 students
(STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths)
Following on from the success of the YES! Programme in 2018, SNC-Lavalin Atkins business are pleased to announce that the programme will be running again in 2019!
They are looking for eight, year 8 students from Winterbourne Academy to participate in this afterschool club which runs on Thursday evening once a month.
There will be 4 technical sessions and a graduation ceremony (dates included in attachment). The programme does not require students to be academically high-achieving, but willing and enthusiastic to learn about science and engineering from those in industry. They would like students to show an aptitude for STEM but that can be both a practical understanding and academic ability.
Last year the sessions covered structural engineering, coding, flood defences, dynamics and aerospace engineering. The sessions include practical and theory elements allowing students to learn the basics of these topics whilst also having chance to practise what they learnt in a simulated test. And the best thing about these sessions that they are all free of charge!
I have included links below for an application form and permission slip, which need to be returned to myself, Mrs Hucker. They request that schools select the first four boys and the first four girls who apply as part of our commitment to reach a more balanced gender split in the industry.
Please be aware this does require commitment from parents to bring & collect students to Atkins office on Aztec West.
Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. This was a popular after school club last year and students who attended really enjoyed this fantastic opportunity.
Kind Regards
Mrs Hucker
